The Brand New Anthem!

Alright folks. Now I know What you’re thinkin’. Centaur’s a pedal store, right? WTF? What’s with the pickup talk? Well, I’ll tell you what’s with the pickup talk. Where do you think your sound starts, buddy? That’s right! With the pickups.

Now Brian Porter knows his stuff. Porter Pickups started in 2008 as an offshoot of Porter Guitars. Unhappy with the pickup offerings available to him as a guitar maker Brian decided to make his own. How’s that for DIY? Last year he hit the streets peddling his new stuff and wound up on our doorstep. He brought along a set of his strat pickups for us to hear and we were sold!

We don’t have a whole lot of demos around here (unless you happen to walk in when Snitch gets his hands on a new pedal…) so we’re very excited to have Brian in the store to demo and answer questions about his full line of hand made and custom built pickups. Plus, how often do you get to hear pickups in action before you buy them?

The demo will be this Sunday, Aug. 22nd from 2-5. There will be beer wine and snacks for those of you brave enough to haul your hungover selves down to the shop and worship at the temple of tone. That’s right… I’m busting out the free beer card – who loves you baby?

There will also be ample oppurtunity for you to try out a variety of pickups and to ask questions like, “What is the difference between AlNiCo II and AlNiCo V?” or “Which Strat set should I use to get that singing bell like tone with the supreme clarity that I seek?” And I do encourage you to ask these questions of Brian because they challenge my already troubled mind! I also encourage you to use your best Knuckles McMighigan voice when asking such questions. Plus you can enter to win a free set of pickups! How cool is that?

The Traben Must Die!

Well folks… Another week has come to pass and no one has taken pity on poor little Traben. As I promised Traben’s price is dropping today, Monday, as it will every Monday… Wait… What? Wednesday? What happened to Tuesday? Whatever. I’m a busy guy. Traben’s price will drop every Monday (or thereabouts) by fifty smackers as we draw ever nearer to that fateful morn when I will personally oversee the destruction by ballista of this poor woe begotten bass! Yes… That’s right I’m working on my witticisms already. Clever little zingers like, “Bass meet wall. Wall meet bass.” Mwahahaha!

For those of you out there who haven’t been paying attention, we here at Centaur occasionally grow weary of our 4, 5, and 6 stringed friends as they hang on our walls a little too long. The 5 strings are a particular annoyance… except for banjos. Well, no… They’re kind of annoying too but in a whole different way. Anyhoo… Traben’s gonna die. I’m tired of looking at it. And now I wanna kill it! (See previous installment for method, time, and place.)

Now in all fairness, Traben’s not that bad. I know there’s someone out there who can tame this wild beast but thus far they sure as hell haven’t graced the stoop of our little slice of Sandy. Traben plays like a champ, stays in tune, and, thanks to the massive hunk of metal they call a bridge, sustains forever. I mean seriously, check this guy out… He plays a Traben. Why the hell wouldn’t you? Ok, I guess you’re right. But what about Bootsy? Now I know you’re not gonna trash talk Bootsy, right? Right.

So anyway, that smokin’ dude plays a Traben. Bootsy plays a Traben. Let me ask you this, Why the hell aren’t you playing one, dummy? C’mon. Get with it!

While I haven’t started building my ballista yet, I have been doing some research. Turns out the ballista represents the pinnacle of Grecian siege warfare technology. With the mechanical advantages made available by the torsion spring those swarthy little buggers were able to pierce the armor of invading armies from ever greater distances!

The Romans further advanced ballista technology after they absorbed the ancient Greek city states and I think some of their innovations may be useful in our little project here so I think we’ll be running as best we can with the Roman design. I’ll keep you updated as the situation develops and please, if you have any suggestions feel free to get in touch.

Return of the Guitar Chopping Block!!

Look folks, sometimes I can be just plain mean. You might have seen it before. Maybe you walked into the shop and Kelly and the Snitch were huddled in the corner holding each other while I lambasted them over some stupid mistake they made. It doesn’t matter how many times they disappoint me. It just kills me a little bit more inside every time it happens.

That said, in a general way I’m a softy for our guitars. I think this place can really be a happy little community that makes room for all comers be they Fenders, Schecters, Jacksons, Harmony’s, Teiscos… you name it. I love ‘em all. Really. Except for one.

Let’s be real straight here. I don’t like it when this happens. I don’t like what I’m about to say and I don’t like what I’m gonna do.

I’m gonna kill this guitar!

This is Traben and I’m gonna kill ‘im dead. And when I’m done I’m gonna kill ‘im again! I’m just that pissed. It wasn’t always like this between me and Traben but I don’t really think this is the time to go into that. Just know that this 12 pound mother is gonna die. I’ve been thinking about it and in keeping with my engineering background I’ve decided to manufacture an entirely new method to destroy it. I’ve decided to call this one

Bass Ballista

Now I know this seems a little cruel but it’s necessary. Imagine what could happen if we didn’t maintain some kind of order in this dump. We’re surrounded by guitars, right? When they step out of line we need to thump ‘em. It keeps the rest in line. And the basses are the worst – they’re bigger!

So I’ve been working on this plan for a while and the blueprint at left is the final result of my efforts. While I have not yet started construction you must not doubt my resolve. Need I remind you of our previous troubles with KK? Ohhh… KK…

Anyway, we’ve decided to give Traben the same chance we gave KK. His fate is entirely in your hands. Traben’s price is gonna drop by 50 smackers every Monday starting on July 26th. If one of y’all turds don’t rescue Traben he’s gonna be lot fodder and I just don’t care. On Monday, September 13th Traben’s price will drop to $50.00. That’s it. If Traben’s still here on Friday the 17th he’ll be escorted to our back room and given what little comfort we can provide. At dawn on the morning of the 18th we will wheel out the Bass Ballista and Traben will be launched into the side of our building.

These are sad times for all of us. We’re sad that it’s come down to this. Very sad.

Me and the big man didn’t even want to rock out in the parking lot this summer! We were just gonna hang out in front of the shop in lawn chairs drinkin’ beer but nooooo…. the de facto crew that books and manages these shows along with their associated cronies demanded that the madness continue. Well… For those of you who haven’t been listening to J piss and moan for the past 10 weeks we have a very special announcement to make! Jason’s gonna graduate from college!

That’s right folks. Oh the long hours of studying and complaining and crying and typing! Little Big J is lining up to be the third of his mother’s three children to gradjamate from big boy school! In honor of this very special event we’re gonna close this dump down on Sunday the 13th of June. Don’t worry, it’s just for the day. We’ll be open again on Monday from 10-7 just like always.

Now I just can’t tell you how excited I was today when the boys presented me with the grandaddy of all congratulatory cakes, Fudgie the Whale (for a whale of a guy)! I know, I know… I’m sure all of you out there would have given me whale cake too if only you’d known. It’s OK. You know I don’t like to draw attention to myself… I’m kind of a humble guy.

Let’s just say that I’ll be moon walking my ass across the stage Sunday afternoon with all the hopes and dreams a middle aged guy like myself can muster.

That’s right folks. We here at Centaur used to be down with the future, dig? So much so that we embraced it right up through the 1970’s… Maybe even a little way into the 1980’s.

Then we stopped.

We’ve got electric guitars. We enjoy the punk rock and the funk rock and it’s recently come to light that ol’ Sweet Pete even likes the Hall & Oates. (editors note: Really Pete? Really? Hall & Oates? WTF?) To some extent we even enjoyed the yacht rock for Chrissakes. After that it seemed like things just went to hell. Look at it today. It seems like technology is just making people crazy. Literally CRAZY! Think about it next time you’re downtown. This blue tooth makes the business guys look like they’re talking to themselves louder than the homeless guys!

You kids and your digital what what and your computer hoo ha can keep the modern age. We don’t need it. We don’t want it! With one exception: Vending Technology!!

Now my good friend the internet tells me that the vending machine was first put to use in the US in the 1880’s and they dispensed that most magical of treats: Tutti Fruiti Chewing Gum. Within 5 years Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart opened America’s first automat restaurant in Philadelphia. Then came the soda and the cigs and the candy. For years America dominated the instant gratification market. And it was good. Real Good. And then… And then… And then nothing. We got lazy. Apparently while we were sleeping the Japanese took over.

In the ’60’s the Japanese went crazy for the vending machines! We’re talking food, smokes, beer, booze, panties, underpants, ramen, sake… You name it they’ve got it it! There’s even a Japanese communist superhero named Coffee Boss who dispenses sweet coffee drinks to all the hard working Salarymen!

Check this out. You can buy eggs in a vending machine in Japan. EGGS!!! Where did we go wrong America? I don’t mean to be heavy handed in my social commentary here but why the hell should I have to go to market to buy my eggs? What if I want eggs at midnight, huh?! Sure I could go to the QFC at 33rd and Broadway and wind my way past the shoulder tapping teenagers and late night hobos but why should I have to?!?!

This brings me to my meaning. While my greatest annoyance may be shoulder tappin’ teens and hobos cashing cans your greatest annoyance might be me. Yeah. I get it. Maybe I annoy the hell out of you. Maybe all you wanna do is get your guitar strings and get out. Maybe you need sticks and you’re tired of my favorite joke, “It’s not Drum Centaur Dumbass!” Or worse yet, maybe it’s 10PM and your about to get on stage and you got no strings on your guitar. Well boy do I have a solution for you!

That’s right America! We’re taking back the vending machine! Centaur Guitar has just rolled out the new…

Electro~Harmonix’s Memory Boy Grows Up!!

Ooohhh… Look how cute! The little Memory Boy’s all growed up.

Electro~Harmonix just released the Deluxe Memory Boy! Yeah, that’s right! It’s like the little one but with more stuff! More stuff like tap tempo. More stuff like effects loop! More stuff like organic tones and dexterity!

It’s like Mike Matthews (Electro~Harmonix Founder and Über Lord) just looks at other effects makers and says: “You totally suck.”

And then the other guys are like: “No we don’t. We make delays too. Why don’t you leave us alone?”

And then Mike Matthews really lays into them and says: “Oh, yeah… you got like, what – two delay pedals? That’s cool ’cause we used to have four but we just made a new one… Bitch!”

And then the other effects makers whimper and say: “Yeah, well ours is totally affordable!”

And then Mike Matthews totally spits in there face and is like: “Maybe you didn’t know the Memory Toy is under a hundred bucks?! Yeah! I bet you didn’t ’cause you don’t know $?!%”

I’ve met the man. I’m sure that’s how the conversation would be. But really, how many more of these things are they gonna make? Think about it. It’s like a family tree of analog delay with the Memory Toy, Memory Boy, Deluxe Memory Boy and Deluxe Memory Man. And then there’s the crazy cousin of the digital world the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai!

Look man. You owe it to yourself to try this thing. The Deluxe Memory Boy practically plays itself. It’s a charming little pedal. Really. We’re kind of like cavemen around this place. We enjoy distortion, fuzz, drive, and gain. Thick and rich, gritty and biting. So when we received TWA’s new Little Dipper vocal formant filter the reaction went something like this:

J: Hey guys check it out! The new Little Dipper vocal formant filter is here!

K: Little Dipper? I hear that’s what they call your…

G: What the hell is a vocal formant filter?!

J: It’s a cool new dual filter effect based on a classic 70’s circuit that reacts dynamically to your playing and creates a variety of funky vowel and diphthong vocal effects!

K: Diphthong? I hear that’s what they call your…

G: You mean like the classic funk sounds that I’ve always tried to get by combining a wah pedal, a talk box, and a phaser?!

J: Yeah!

G: Damn.

Centaur Guitar at the NAMM Show Vol. III

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So what if I’m three weeks late. Let’s see you do better. No. Really. I’m sick and tired of… OK, never mind. I’m sorry I snapped at you. It’s been rough around here lately. Kelly’s been grumpier than usual and the Snitch hurt his back and is all hopped up on the pills and such. I’m really the only guy keeping it together around here these days.

Anyway I guess what I’m really trying to say is I’m sorry. Let’s just get down to it shall we?

Will the real Hugh McDonald please stand up?

Well Saturday started alright. You know how it goes. Birds chirping, palm trees swaying and I missed the damn continental breakfast again. I promised myself I was gonna get the muffin this time but I just woke up too late. Nice work. OK, I know that’s not the part you care about but this is my blog, not yours. OK, this next part is the part you care about.

Imagine if you will… You wake up tired and hung over on Saturday morning. You find yourself in the basement of a huge convention center under the cool glow of a thousand fluorescent lights as dozens of guitar dorks noodle in the background – it’s strangely relaxing. You’re just about to enjoy your first drink of coffee and you tell yourself once again, “it’s gonna be ok J.” OK… Got it? Are you with me so far? Alright, now imagine that the noise stops, the lights flicker and all of a sudden a dude dressed like Paul McCartney walks up to you and asks if you’d like to meet Hugh McDonald.

Wild, huh? Wait, what? What do you mean who’s Hugh McDonald? It’s Hugh “Huge” McDonald, man. The bass player for Bon Jovi! He played for years with the David Bromberg Band! And you know what? Dude, he’s a totally nice guy. I’m pretty sure he was hung over and confused too. We bonded over the many varied experiences that we had in common as well as our mutual respect for each others work.

And things really just got better as the morning wore on. I left my meeting with Hugh, took two left turns and bumped square into George Friggin Barris!! The world renowned King of Kustomizers! He was standing there next to the real friggin’ Batmobile pimping Hallmark’s killer new Wing Bat guitar!

As I’ve mentioned before, you can’t take two steps in this place without running into a major industry big wig. Despite our best efforts to prove this theorem wrong, two steps due south of George Barris we ran smack into Seymour Duncan. Now here’s the deal, industry wigs don’t get much bigger than Seymour Duncan’s. The man’s a damn legend! He’s wound pickups for Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page for cryin’ out loud!

He also hangs with Neil Schon, man! That guys no slouch either! Neil and I had a lot of catching up to do but I’d made an appointment for a photo op with Bootsy Collins so I had to go.

Bootsy and I go way back and he wanted to do some promo shots with me. Now who am I to say no to Bootsy? It took us quite some time to stage this elaborate shot but thankfully we were able to pull it off! I’d look for it soon in all the bass mags.

After hobknobbing with all the big shots on Saturday morning we decided to get out of the NAMM show and get into some real trouble at the Deke Dickerson Guitar Geek Festival! Man, what a treat! Now if you’re a guitar geek (and don’t fool yourself, if you’re reading this you are a guitar geek… or you’re my mom… thanks Mom) you must attend this festival. I’ve never seen so many original Bigsby’s in one place at one time! Well before this I’d really ever only seen two up close so that’s easy, but really, there were dozens of ‘em!

And man, oh man, Big Sandy was there. Deke was there… The dude with the afro and the moustache from the guitar magazines was there! Don’t worry store attorney. I didn’t even bring up any of our previous issues…

Well, that pretty much ended our excursion. We logged many miles and witnessed many tragedies but we made it home safe. We also scored a few goodies like the new line of Way Huge pedals reissued by Jim Dunlop and the very handy Pedal Train line of pedal boards! Come by and check them out!

I hope that you all understand the hell that I’ve been through just to give you a little insight into the mad, mad world that is the retail music industry. You’re welcome.

Centaur Guitar at the NAMM Show Vol. II

Look, look, I know we’re a day or two late here… I’ve just been so busy. You have no idea the responsibilities of a socialite like me. I mean seriously, Steve, seriously, I had urgent appointments with so many celebrities and spokespersons and whatnot.

Well I’m here to make it up to you. What follows is an entirely accurate and truthful portrayal of the collected events of Friday afternoon that together make up:

I’ll be straight with you. Friday was a bit rough. It started rough and just got worse. Maybe some of you guys remember poor little KK… (if not click here…) KK was a nice little guitar that we had a while back that just went bad… plain bad. Well guess what gearheads? I found his Dad!

I was still a little broken up about the whole KK situation and I’ll be honest with you, I let him know! And then he responded in kind. Jeez! This guys not that big but man he packs a whallup!

Don’t worry though, a little bit of ice and the swelling went down. My glasses flew off my head but they were alright. You should have seen what I did to him afterward! I ran… That’s right, I ran! I’m not ashamed to say it. I ran like hell! That guy’s mean! Did you see the tattoos on his head?! What would you do, huh?

Yeah, so it started like that and it just got worse. Here’s the way it works, ok? So I figure out what time I need to be where for my appointments (that would be autographs, etc.) and we take it from there. Well you’d think it’d be just as easy for everyone else wouldn’t you?!

I tell you what, apparently it’s not. The only guy me and Bunty wanted to meet all day was Weird Al. Guess what?! Weird Al didn’t care. Look at this. We waited… and waited… and waited…

And guess what!? Weird Al shows up 45 minutes late! And guess what else?! We waited anyway! And then guess what else!? They cut off the line right as we got close! Not cool Weird Al! Not Cool!!! Worse than that we missed our photo op with Lemmy because we waited! Not cool Lemmy! Not Cool!!!

I’ll be honest you innerweb. I was disappointed – sorely disappointed. Somehow I was under the impression that everybody wants to be your friend when your 967 miles away. Turns out I was totally wrong. What a drag.

And then guess what?!?! So we’re walkin’ around skulking when we see who!? Keith friggin’ Morris! Yeah! That’s right! Ever hear of the Circle Jerks you turds!?! Now this one was a real surprise for me and as you can see by the photo poor Keith was surprised too. And by surprised I mean pissed… or bummed I guess. Turns out he’s one of those guys who didn’t really want to be hassled for photos but I couldn’t resist and as I explained to him how important I thought his music was I think he came around.

Things gradually got better. We were lucky enough to run into the DBZ girls a little later. DBZ is a guitar company founded by Dean B. Zalinsky. That’s the Dean in Dean, sucka. The DBZ girls are a nice bunch of ladies who really seem to care a lot about the history and the future of the music industry in America. It’s inspiring and refreshing to know that the real spirit of Rock & Roll is alive and kicking these days!
